Fun and Family Tennis This Friday

We have received confirmation that we can have four tennis courts at Thompson Valley High School this Friday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00.

This is an informal gathering and student players and their family members are invited.  We had in mind to have some boys vs. girls team matches as well as parent/ student and or coach/ student friendly games, probably to  7 or 11 points, (& win by 2).

We also have received our ribbons from the district to give to the players and we'd like to honor our assistant volunteer coaches, Valerie Hecker, Theresa Kennard, and Brian Petersen at the gathering.

We will provide tennis players with an information/ reply sheet Wednesday.  Students need to arrange their own transportation to and from Thompson Valley High School.  Thompson Valley is close enough to walk to, and of course, students can car pool with friends if they arrange that on their own.

Please reply if you think you'll be joining us - though a reply is not required to join us; hope to see you there.

Best regards,

Mr. Hagstrom

Student-Family Round Robin Tennis Gathering in Works - Stay Tuned

Dear Reed Tennis Families,

We're trying to put together a final tennis gathering for the year - and hopefully to include a time for parents to play with their children.  Here's the details as I've set forth in a letter to our Athletic Director, Josh Cox:

Mr. Cox,

I've had the brainstorm to see if we can't put together a student-family fun round-robin of games for one last tennis gathering this year.  Yesterday, I talked  to my assistant coaches and they can and would like to join in.  As you know, Jon Sharp from Clark is going to be sending ribbons in from the conference championship, and I've asked if we couldn't provide certificates for the players.  We also need a photo opportunity for the team with the trophy.

The idea would be to have 3-4 courts from a nearby school - Thompson Valley or Loveland High School and have a fun play off of boys' team vs. girls' team matches, as well as parent/student match ups.  Ideally it would be in the afternoon - about 4:00 - giving parents a chance to join in and kids to work out transportation - till about 6:00.

We would also hand out the ribbons and thank you's to the assistant coaches.

Josh or Debra, could either of you help me schedule courts for next Thursday or Friday the 17th or 18th?

It would be a great, fun family involvement opportunity and an opportunity to send the players and coaches off on a warm footing.

Thank you,

Mr.  Hagstrom

Reed Wins Conference

The Reed Tennis Machine is now the new district champion.

Reed Tennis won over last year's champs, Walt Clark, scoring 32 points to 26.   On court after court our girls, many of whom had very little previous tennis experience, left the court as doubles winners.

Results:

Touchsada Janon and Courtney Chavez won the girl’s overall no. 1 doubles team championship.

Fernando Corona and Salvador Mercado took second place in the boys’ no. 1 division.

Isamaya Hagstrom and Madison Sheets took second in the girl’s no. 2 division.

Samuel Zimmerman and Jack Kisch took first place for boys’ varsity 4 group.

Breeana Dykstra and Ivy Ryan also first place for the girl’s varsity 3 group.

Also, of course, Alissa Hinojsa and Katya Hernblom  remained undefeated in doubles games against other schools, winning the girls varsity no. 4 division.  Yes, I owe you Twinkees.

To round out the day: 7th Grade LISA Students Emma Maggie-Byers and Nicole Standiford also won the girls JV no. 1 division.

Congratulations to all the Reed girls and boys - persevering and good sports - on a day they represented themselves and Reed in a great way.

Thank you also to assistant coach Theresa Knnard.  She’s got our school’s newest victory trophy on display in the main office.

Tennis players, don’t forget, our final fun practice will be this Wed. at 3:00, here at Reed.
If you wish, bring water balloons, we're having freeze tag, capture the flag, and a water balloon toss.

Thank you,

Mr. Hagstrom

The District has moved up the start time for the girls' Tournament Games on Saturday, May 5.

We are asking that all players to arrive at 8:30 AM.

Boys Varsity will continue to start at 9:00 AM.

Girls Jr. Varsity games 1-2 will also start at 9:00 AM  This is a big change.

Girls Varsity will follow right after the boys who play on their court finish.  This means girls games could begin as early as approximately 9:45.  This is an important change

 Thank you,

Tournament & Practices leading to Conference Championship

Our Conference Championship Tournament is Saturday, May 5.

In the tournament, doubles teams will play in pools of 3 teams, playing against the double team with the same ranking from each of the other two schools in the league: Walt Clark and Erwin.

The boys need to check in at 8:30 and their games begin at 9:00.
The girls check in is at 11:00 am. Naturally, we encourage our girls to arrive at 10:00 to cheer the boys on, and we'd like the boys to stay till 1:00 to root for the girls if possible.

We will continue to have practices on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays - except May 4 (no practice) leading up to Conference.

We are also planning a post-tournament celebration day, Wednesday, May 9, from 3:00 - 4:30 pm.
Students should come dressed to play tennis games on the field.

Reed Tennis Scrimmage Results against Walt Clark, April 19

The Reed Tennis Machine did unpleasantly surprise league leaders and rivals Walt Clark yesterday at Mountain View High School.  We played hot and cool under slightly rainy skies.

If girls do cry more easily, for both sorrow and joy, we added to that possibility yesterday, when our girls dominated the day, winning 6 of 7 matches. Congrats to Sofia Ozambala and Ivy Ryan for their Varsity Doubles No. 2 win and Isamaya Hagstrom and Madison Sheets Varsity 3 win.

You have to hand it to the duet, Alissa Hinojsa and Katya Hernblom, they remain undefeated, and won the varsity 4 match 6 games to none, giving these boisterous girls some bragging rights.

Emma Maggie-Byers and Nicole Standiford racked up a 6-2 win. And 6th graders Crystal Gonzalez and Sammi Hammond kept smiling and perservered to win 6 games to 4.

Reed girls also made a couple guys cry - girls can do that to you ya know - as Tennyson Norton, Morgan Coulter and Vanessa Romero played against Walt Clark boys and won decisively, 6 games to 1, offering cheery handshakes for condolences.

But Reed Boys Tennis was not to be outdone yesterday. Our guys were kinda the mountain men of Tennis yesterday.  Samuel Zimmerman and Jack Kisch took varsity game no 4.  Imanol Mercado and Chance Lemus teamed up to win varsity 3.  and Fernando Corona and Salvador Mercado regained their top of the hill status, beating the Walt Clark no. 1 varsity team, 6 games to 5.   Way to go guys.

The days final tally was Reed Tennis 9 matches to Walt Clark 2, making Reed the regular season winners and leaders. Brightest of all was the Reed Team's positive enthusiasm, we think filling their coaches and parents with a lot of Reed Pride.

Get ready and please join us May 5th when we play in the district tournament on Cinco de Mayo at Thompson Valley High School.

Thank you,

Mr. Hagstrom and Mrs. Kinnard

Reed Tennis Scrimmage Results against Erwin, April 17

Wow - A fun and exciting day for Reed Tennis players and their families under sunny skies at Loveland High School against a undermanned Erwin Squad - a fourth of their team were away in their role as thespians.  The day's highlight game was the boys no.1 varsity doubles match up of Fernando Corona and Salvador Mercado against the Erwin no. 1 team.  The one set game went on for more than an hour as the four boys battled through deuces in many games.  Erwin took the game, but that was about all they took yesterday afternoon.

The other big story was Touchsada Janon and Courtney Chavez.  They beat two Erwin varsity girls doubles teams and earned the spot of Reed girls varsity no.1 position.   Brianna Dykstra and Ivy Ryan also beat the Erwin no. 2 varsity team 6 games to 2.

Since Erwin was short on players, Reed played Reed in a concert of close games and good sportsmanship.  Isamaya Hagstrom and Madison Sheets beat the tough and undefeated team of Katya Hernblom and Alissa Hinojsa, just barely, 6 games to 5.  Emma Maggie-Byers and Tennyson Norton held off Sofia Ozambala and Nicole Standiford in another close match.  Then Crystal Gonzalez and Morgan Coulter won the JV division, while the team of Vanessa Romero and Sammi Hammond also came away with a win.

In boys varsity action, Cullen Britton and Jacob Norton won both their matches including another close marathon game over their own Reed rivals, Chance Lemus and Jack Kisch, 6 games to 4 and played right into dinner time.

Give congrats to the Reed Tennis team players; they played great tennis and showed good sportsmanship yesterday afternoon.

Next up is league leader Walt Clark, this Thursday at Mountain View High School.  We think Clark will be unpleasantly surprised by the Reed Tennis Machine, now in full swing.

Reed Tennis News Announcement

The Reed tennis players had a great day yesterday afternoon in their match up against Erwin Middle School.

The girls, who tied Walt Clark last week 3 matches  to 3; this week prevailed in 4 of their 7 matches, winning over Lucille Erwin, 4 to 3.  An exciting statistic for the girls team:  the total game score in the matches the girls won was 24 games to 6.  Some highlights: Touchsada Janon and Courtney Chavez took the girls varsity no. 2 doubles match 6 games to 1; Ivy Ryan and Vanessa Romero also dominated 6 games to 1; and the only undefeated girls team this year so far, Alissa Hinojsa and Katya Hernblom also won big: 6 games to 1.  Plus varsity vet Breeana Dykstra paired with newcomer Sammi Hammond, and won their match 6 games to 3.

The boys team tied Erwin, splitting the match ups.  The highlight match was the number one varsity doubles pair, Fernando Corona and Salvador Mercado. They took their match 6 games to 3.  The other highlight was the final doubles game, Reed against Reed, for the Varsity Doubles 3 position.  Cullen Britton and Jacob Norton pulled out the win over Jack Kisch and Imanol Mercado in a closely fought battle, 6 games to 4.

High 5 your tennis friends; they were good competitors and friendly, supportive hosts to Erwin yesterday at Mountain View.  Reed Tennis: Good Sports.   Thanks for a great day,

Mr. Hagstrom and Ms. Kinnard

Reed Tennis, Spring 2012

Tennis at Bill Reed began earlier this week, Monday, March 12, here at Reed on the courtyard plaza. There is an optional make-up practice today, also on "The Plaza."  Regular Friday practice, as it will be every Friday, is also at Reed. Practices are from 3:00 to 4:45.

The 16 students who came to the first practice on a perfect spring-like day, were enthusiastic and worked through all the exercises in a impressively coordinated way. Cheers for that.

Next week we begin playing at the courts at Dwayne Webster Park, at the Southeast end of Lake Loveland. The park is sometimes called "Cannon Park" for the old weapon on the greens there. Practice on those courts will be on Monday and Wednesday. We will finish playing there at 4:30 sharp and then jog back to the school together. Students who will have a ride home should be picked up from the East parking lot, near to the tables on "Plaza", and just above the track.

This allows those students being picked up to wait together, socialize, and be at least in a lightly supervised area of campus. Parking in that lot at that hour, has in the past been quite open.

If you would like to chat or have questions about the program or your child's participation, a fine time to do that is between 4:45 and 5:00 p.m.. Not later than 5:00 please, our dog is at home eagerly awaiting an afternoon run.

Thank you and Welcome,
Mr. Hagstrom
