Schedule Changes for May

We won't have practice on Thursday, May 12th. Mr. Hagstrom will not be at school that day.

Erwin's coach and I are working on setting up a second match during the 2nd week of May - aiming for Tuesday, May 10th or Wednesday, May 11th. We're looking into both Loveland and Thompson Valley High Schools for an open afternoon. Will keep you posted.

Regards,

Mr. Hagstrom

Practice Update - Thursday, April 28

Since we are the combined Reed - Ball team, we don't have a scrimmage this week. At the season's outset, before the teams combined, there was a scrimmage set at Bertoud High School between the two schools. We'll practice on our Plaza at Reed as usual.

Thank you,
Mr. Hagstrom

Parents: Please, try to remind your student to come to school with footwear to play tennis in. I'm getting a few students in flip flops and that's not adequate for tennis. I imagine I can't let unprepared students play, and missing practice for lack of shoes, would be an unexcused absence.

Morning Announcement for Friday, April 22 Reed vs. Clark Scrimage Results

Congratulations Reed Tennis Players on your first effort. We witnessed a lot of good things on the courts today and we are proud of you as players and a team. It's great how you supported each other positively and competed with your hearts. It's a sign of more good things to come.

Here are our match highlights:

Our varsity no. 2 doubles boys team of Andrew VerSteeg and Brett Corona won a 17 game, hour and a half match, persisting through many advantage games, to win 9-8.
It was a great match to watch and wonderful how Andrew and Brett kept their poise to the finish.

The score was turned slightly around for our girls, Lizbeth Villalobos and Kaylee Speer, who also went on to play to the tie breaking 17th game, but finally lost to Clark no. 3 varsity doubles team, 8-9 games. Great effort girls!

Other bright spots:

Ivy Ryan & Breanna Dykstra solidy took the JV Doubles no.1 match 7 games to 2 while
Giedre Kisieliute and Savannah Erickson also were victorious in their match 5-4. Ivy and Breanna have qualified to move up to varsity for Friday's matches.

We are proud of how all of you gave your best effort and represented Reed with hard work in the game, spirit and being supportive of your team mates. It's a fine thing keeping chins up even when matches didn't go our way.

Remember that today's matches against Erwin are at Loveland High School at 3:30.

Stop by Mr. Hagstrom's room, 208, to view the assignments for this afternoon.

All the best,

Mr. Hagstrom

Reed vs. Erwin Line Up for April 22

Here is a the list our girls for Friday against Erwin at Loveland High at 3:30.

V1: Raquel Valdez
V2: Giedre Kisieliute
V3: Kaylee Speer

VD4-5: Susan Albin and Lizbeth Villalobos
VD6-7: Maria Montanez and Jordan Guerra
VD8-9: Ivy Ryan & Breeana Dykstra*

*In the event Ivy Ryan can't attend, Kaylee Speer, in addition to her single's match, can pair with Breeana.

JV 10-11: Courtney Chavez & Rachel Garcia
JV 12-13: Tennyson Norton & Malea Mill
JV 14-15: Rochelle Foutch & Rachel Lins

And our guys - Match - ups will depend on Erwin's team size. Clark allowed our singles players to also play doubles because of our small guys squad. If Erwin has a full 9 man varsity, then I'll imagine they will let us double up again.

Here's the scenario if guys may double up:

V1: Sam Hecker
V2: Andrew VerSteeg
V3: Brett Corona

VD1: Andrew VerSteeg & Brett Corona
VD2: Tim Klotsch & Eric Garcia
VD3: Sam Hecker or Chance Lemus & Luke Slayback

If our guys may not double up, here's our line up:

V1:
V2:
V3: Sam Hecker

VD1: Andrew VerSteeg & Brett Corona
VD2: Tim Klotsch & Eric Garcia
VD3: Chance & Luke Slayback

Best of luck & cheers to all,

Mr. Hagstrom

Reed vs. Clark - Post Scrimmage Notes

Congratulations on your first effort. We witnessed a lot of good things on the courts today and we are proud of you as players and a team. It's great how you supported each other positively and competed with your hearts. It's a sign of more good things to come.

Here are our match highlights: Morning Announcement

Other things to be aware of:

I'm especially content with your efforts after learning this afternoon that the Clark players practice on the Thompson Valley tennis courts everyday, while we have trained everyday without courts and on our school's plaza with half size nets; and we have in fact only had the opportunity to set foot on real courts for 2 practices. But just as Brazilians can play football on the crowded streets between high rises, or in dirt lots, or on little patches of land and against walls, we can develop on the facilities we have.

It's probably fair to say we are at some disadvantage in the place of our training, but I believe you played competitively when you were matched against players of similar experience. Part of me feels a need to apologize to those of you who have only held a racquet for several weeks and went up against rivals who had years of experience, as was the case particularly for our varsity girls.

Nevertheless, I appreciate the way you stuck to the match, concentrated, and earned points and won games over opponents in some cases with years more experience playing. You should definitely not feel disappointed in yourselves for having been placed in that circumstance. Consider it merely a learning experience to help you set goals and thank you for having been so courteous, even when such matchings probably don't make truly fair competitions.

I'll work on seeing that you have matches where you are better aligned with players with more similar levels of experience. We have a lot of players with talent and heart, but that alone cannot normally set you up to win against someone with years more experience than you.

So thank you and great job! See you tomorrow for our game against Erwin at Loveland High School at 3:30. I'll be setting the teams later tonight

Respectfully yours,

Mr. Hagstrom

Update on Games This Week

Remember that our game against Walt Clark at Thompson Valley was postponed last week. So we have our first two matches this week!

Matches begin at 3:30, so you need to arrive by 3:15. If you're there a bit early, there's a good chance you can warm up on a court.

Here is the schedule:

Thursday against Walt Clark at TVHS at 3:30 (arrive between 3:00 and 3:15).
Friday against Ewrin at Loveland H.S. at 3:30 (again arrive by 3:15).

Remember to bring water!
Don't forget to wear your Reed Tennis Shirt. If you haven't payed for the shirt - it is a team jersey, and you may be asked to lend it to another player.

Our player line up for Thursday will be the same as last week - unless a player has been suspended from game play due to absences, etc. I believe I will have a modified line up for Friday - probably to be sure all girls have experience playing doubles as well.

Note: The match on April 26 is at Bertoud H.S. But it is Reed vs. Ball - but we are a Reed/Ball squad, so we won't go to Bertoud. Thus, no games next week.

Remember to know your game schedule. Here's a link if you need it:

Tennis Spring Schedule

We have no schedule for Saturday, May 14th yet.

Note: Recall that there are attendance requirements to play at games. Not meeting practice requirements makes you ineligible to play games unless exceptions are made in special cases. Generally, exceptions won't be made unless there are sound reasons for the absence and your playing is beneficial first to the team, rather than to the individual. Poor attendance is also grounds to suspend a player or remove him/her from the team. We want everyone to play, but this is a team sport that requires your commitment. If you cannot make that commitment, please don't expect to remain on the team.

Thank you,
Mr. Hagstrom

Awesome Practice

Tennis was awesome today. We had only a small crew who made it here today after the postponed game. Remember, practice is not cancelled unless we specifically let you know. We covered paperwork, t-shirts, scoring and strategies of position in my classroom 208. Then we went to the gym for a full sized court and played champs vs. challengers with changing teams. That was a lot of fun. Thank you for those who made it today - your dedication is much appreciated.

Mr. Hagstrom

Tennis on Thursday, April 14

Yes, we are still having practice. We're going to take advantage of the foul (tennis) weather to go over rules, paperwork, and a bit of strategy.

Come dressed out, because we should have the gym to ourselves for some indoor skill fun.

Thank you,

Mr. Hagstrom

This Just In - Postponement of Match

Thompson Valley has bumped us from their courts on Thursday. Therefore, we will need to move this Thursdays match to next Thursday the 21st. I am sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. This is a new sport and we are still working out the kinks. I will keep your roster for next week. If you have changes, let me know.

Jon Sharp, Athletic Director, Walt Clark

Consequently, we will have a regular practice here at Reed on Thursday.

Absences Clarification

Your agreement to participate asks that you commit to 3 of 4 practices each week as a minimum. We would like you here every practice, but exceptions are for you to attend special family, medical, and personal events and to have an opportunity to attend other after school activities and still play on the team.

Your parent should let me know if you will be missing a practice regularly for some event.

You should let me know if you are going to be gone for a special occasion and I'd appreciate communication to me in advance or a note that excuses you from the missed practice afterward.

I would like your parents to know if your planning on missing a practice and for you to communicate and receive permission from them to do so.

If you were also absent from school, the note to school is enough to bring in for an excused absence. If you are only missing practice, not classes, you should stop by and let me know if you can, or give me a note before or afterward. I appreciate it when you stop by and let me know. That gives me a chance to communicate with you about important information on any given day.

Remember that missed practices may cause you to fall behind your peers, requires repeat explanations, and doesn't let you approach your growth potential the same as those who can commit to the sport.

Occasional absences due to illness are naturally permissible, but should be limited and not affect your ability to participate fully or affect the team detrimentally.

Remember, if you don't meet the 75% practice level the week before a game, then it's very possible that you won't be allowed to play in the match that follows. Exceptions to the guideline would be limited, due to special circumstances, and considering both the needs of the individual and the team as a whole.

Best Regards,

Mr. Hagstrom

Currently all practices are at Reed on the Plaza using two portable nets & the cafeteria wall. We are also aiming for a once week practice at nearby (jogging distance) 13th St. courts as well as four Friday late afternoon practices at local high schools.

2. Students must be able to commit to 3 practices weekly.

3. Games will be alternately at Loveland, Thompson, and Mountain View high schools, primarily on Thursdays.

4. Families will need to provide transportation to off-campus matches and practices, (except for when we jog to the nearby 13th St. courts), the Tennis Camp on Saturday, April 9 and the final Tournament on Saturday, May 14.

5. Practices begin March 17 and the game season is from April 7 – May 14. The first game is a scrimmage at Thompson Valley H.S., April 7.
